The red mountain
The coast of Aglientu stretches for 22 kilometres and is unspoilt for long sections. Its landmark is Monti Russu — "red mountain" — a rounded relief of pink granite that pushes out into the Gulf of Asinara. The name comes from the colour the rocks take on at sunset.
The beach below is a half-moon of pale sand with medium and fine grains. Rocks on its western side shelter another small cove, and the clear water and big red boulders give the place a wild, almost cinematic feel.
Neighbours and walks
Monti Russu lies near the resort of Rena Majore, with the beaches of Lu Litarroni and Naracu Nieddu just a short distance away. A coastal path links the beach of Vignola with Monti Russu via Lu Litarroni — a rewarding walk of moderate difficulty with constant sea views; you return the same way and see the coast from a new angle.
Practical tips
- Access: park along the access road off the SP90 coastal road and continue on foot along sandy paths.
- No services: there are no bars or umbrella hire — bring water, food and shade.
- Wind: the mistral can blow hard here; the granite spurs offer only partial shelter, so check the forecast.
- Timing: mornings are the most peaceful; stay for sunset to see the "red mountain" live up to its name.
